Without a doubt Madrid is a great city for art. Its museums boast works by internationally renowned painters from across the centuries like Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya and modern artists like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí.
A visit to at least one of Madrid’s museums is essential for any art lover.
As an Official Guide of Madrid, I offer guided museum tours where I explain the works from an historical perspective, including anecdotes from the lives of the artists, the principal characteristics of each period, fashions, ideals of beauty and much more.
After the guided tour, I recommend stopping for coffee so that we can discuss what we’ve seen and exchange impressions.
Below I outline some of the principal museums that can be visited, although there are many, many more. Please get in touch if you require further information.
THE PRADO MUSEUM
We’ll take in masterpieces by artists like El Greco, Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, Hieronymos Bosch and Peter Paul Rubens.
The Prado Museum was founded in 1819 with what was previously the art collection of the Spanish Royal Family. The Spanish monarchs were great connoisseurs of Spanish, Flemish and Italian art, amongst others. The guided tour lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.
REINA SOFÍA MUSEUM
The Reina Sofía Museum boasts a magnificent collection of works by Spanish and international artists like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Alexander Calder, Robert Capa and Roy Lichtenstein.
Its most famous work is undoubtedly Guernica by Picasso, painted in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. We’ll study the symbolism of the painting and its historical context. The guided tour lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.
MADRID'S ROYAL PALACE
The Royal Palace in Madrid, built in the 17th century, is the largest in Western Europe. A large proportion of the original decoration and furnishings has been preserved. The palace’s beautiful salons will satisfy even the most demanding of visitors. The guided tour last 1 hour.
