El Escorial
We visit the Monastery of El Escorial some 45kn from Madrid. Felipe II ordered it to be built in the 16th century and he found the ideal spot here in the Guadarrama Mountains.
Since then it’s considered the 8th wonder of the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a must for all lovers of history. The site dates from the Renaissance period and include the palace, the Basilica, the Royal Pantheon, the Monastery, the School and the Library. The monastery houses important artistic works that have survived several fires and even various wars. These include the library and important works by Spanish, Flemish and Italian painters like Rogier van der Weyden, Titian, Diego Velázquez and El Greco.
As an Official Guide of Madrid I’ll be leading a visit to the Palace, the Basilica, the Royal Pantheon and the Monastery.
After visiting the Monastery of El Escorial we’ll take a walk through the town of the same name. I highly recommend having lunch or dinner in one of the local restaurants where you can sample regional specialities like suckling pig or roasted lamb.
"These are my favourite routes and experiences although MADRID BY HEART offers much, much more than this, and I’d love to design a custom-made programme just for you. Do get in touch for more information or to check our prices. "
